Where Has Summer Gone?
It seems just like yesterday that we were shoveling snow
and getting the huts all cleaned out for warmer weather
and now here we are headed back for the “Cold Weather”
routine. The Pig-A-Sus has had a good summer, lots going
on between the Sanctuary and trying to build the new
building before cold weather, which now seems to “Not be
going to happen” as we have planned. The County
still has not ok’d the building permit, so we are just
sitting hoping that in the next few weeks it is
approved. IF not, then we most likely will have to
postpone the construction until Spring, as
right now all the ground work has been done and with all
the rain it is just one big mud hole.
Even though they are predicting a “wet/cold” winter,
with a few adjustments to the older wooden huts we will
be able to survive the winter, plus lots of fresh and
fluffy wheat straw, all should happy.
What is a few months of extra work with frozen water,
ice and shoveling snow. We have gotten several semi
loads of wood for the heat for the new concrete huts, so
the “oldsters” will have the luxury of heated huts with
fresh air. We have learned a lot with the new huts, and
want to implement the improvements to the new building,
so maybe not getting the permit as expected, is a
“blessing in disguise” as they say.
All the “Potbelly Pig’s” are doing great thru the
summer. We did loose “My Little Man” (who actually was a
little girl) a few weeks back to old age, She was close
to 20, so she had a good life and was active until the
end.
The new additions this summer, Otis (4) & Petunia (3),
have become a couple!!!!!! They now share a hut and with
the little fat cheeks that they have they will be great
this winter sharing…. Odie (5 mts) & Sassy (5 mts), from
Florida are doing great. Odie has become friends with
another new addition “MoShu”(1½) who came from Denver.
MoShu and Odie have become buddies while Ms. Sassy was
off to her movie star break thru. She will appear in a
movie that should be in complete production and ready in
early spring. It will be titled “Forget Me Not”. This
movie was filmed in Colorado around Fort Collins area,
We will post when it is finished. Sassy was a hit in all
aspects, along with Rocky, That is another story….
We have received so many calls this summer inquiring
about placement, we are so full and with the economy the
way that it is, we are literally speaking “Afraid to
take in more” right now we have 73, and out of the 73 &
19 are very special needs..and with donations down it is
tight.
Now that school has started, we do not have the
volunteers that we had thru the summer. Ms. Lauren from
Fruita was great. We want to say a “Special Thank You to
her,” as she devoted lots of her summer hours at the
Pig-A-Sus, Laren, thank you so much and Ms. Sassy thanks
you also for all the “Bad Times” she gave you in
training. Laren not only rolled up her sleeves in pen
cleaning, watering, she worked with Sassy teaching her
to lead, sit and eat treats!!!!!! Good Job to a
wonderful young volunteer. Again Thanks from Sioux,
Rocky, LJ and Ms. Sassy
Now an update on the most “Famous Research Girls from
University of Salt Lake.” Ruby and Topaz are so SPECIAL,
these girls have not got a clue that they are “Pigs.”
They think that they are “People” Ruby sits and waits
for you to put her food in the bowls and then you tell
her she can eat. Topaz thinks that every time you are
close to her she needs pets, scratches, and they love to
have their little ears rubbed. We have taken all the
tags and rings out of there ears and I have sworn to go
get these rings that guys put in their ears and put in.
They still are so individualized, They are great in the
pen together, but when eating and sleeping comes around,
they want their own separate space. Ruby is a climber
and she will climb the panels and run around in the yard
visiting everything and everybody, then she goes back
and climbs in her pen and just hangs out. Topaz, is
trying to eat the bark off the tree and sometimes she
tries to climb on the lower branches, and sit. Health
issues have been so minimal that I sometimes forget that
they are not use to this sort of environment, but they
have adjusted so well. AND amazingly enough they are
still small each have gained about 3 pounds since they
arrived. Check the pictures on the web site as we are
getting ready to post new ones and they will be
included.
The Summer Open House was good. Lots of people came thru
and we did have several good sponsors, which we would
like you to patronize if you get a chance, End Zone
Sports Pub, Fruita, Colorado, Big-O-Tires, Grand
Junction, Gold Gym, Shell Fuel and Convinces in Fruita,
Clifton Lube, Clifton, City Market, Gift Cards, and to
anyone we missed we apologize, but know that all was
deeply appreciated. We also will post pictures of
these events. We have been so busy this summer with
work, farming and taking care of the Sanctuary we have
not had much computer time, and needless to say the
computer has been down several times in the last couple
of months, Guess we will have to finally concede and buy
a new one some day.
We are going to be doing something different for the
winter “Open House/Fundraiser” and the holidays this
year, so starting around the 1st of November watching
your mail, as you will be getting a letter from us
explaining what we are doing.
Now one more quick note, for all of those who view the
website and read our newsletter, there are several
changes:
We are going to quarterly newsletters again OR WHEN
THERE IS SOMETHING URGENT, WE WILL POST… SO KEEP
CHECKING BACK TO MAKE SURE THAT YOU ARE NOT MISSING OUT
ON SOME EVENT OR SOME GREAT ACCOMPLISHMENT, Medical will
be updates often
We will update with photo more often and medical notes.
But on the Sanctuary news and Potbelly pigs, there
basically isn’t much change. We have PayPal’s for
donations or our mailing address is still the same: 506

2nd We have been receiving an unusual amount of request
for adoptions of Mini pigs/teacup pigs and if we don’t
have any can we recommend a breeder that may have some
for sale. Come on guys, we appreciate the contact
don’t get us wrong, but we are a Sanctuary for unwanted
potbelly pigs that have outgrown their welcome in a
family or have gotten to big, or the families, due to
economy can no longer afford to take care of them or
their health. Many of these potbelly pigs that we have
on site in the Sanctuary were purchased as your famous
“Mini pigs” that now weigh 200+ pounds, are arthritic,
don’t have good health from being inbred. We are not
saying that all Mini pigs do the above, but please be
sure to do your homework before purchasing. If you
contact a rescue/ Sanctuary, you are going to hear the
real truth, and 10 out of 10 times, you will hear “We do
not recommend Breeders for purchases, when there are
1,000’s of loving, wonderful potbelly pigs in rescues
all over the USA looking for homes.” Please reconsider
adoption and educate yourself on one of the most “Unique
Pet’s” a family could ever include. Remember most people
choose potbelly pigs because of the length of their
lives 20+ years, a lot of the mini pigs, teacup pigs
have a much less life span because of all the health
issue that arise, You may be a lucky person and find one
that doesn’t give you “A special needs” project pet, but
they are very, very rare.
If you have health questions please feel free to contact
us thru email and we will get back with you as soon as
possible. Remember we have full time jobs, plus the
Sanctuary, if it is an emergency please contact your vet
immediately….
